Perfecting Posture

What is posture?



We have all heard our parents say "fix your posture" or "sit up straight". But what does that actually mean? According to the American Chiropractic, Posture is the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down.

During the past few years, I have noticed that posture has an impact on how everyone moves their body. The first thing I do with my clients is an assessment that includes a posture test, and I encourage you to try it out right now.

Posture Test

Find a wall with nothing on it and put your heels, butt, shoulders and head against the wall. Start with your hands by your side and raise your arms up over your head and see how far you can reach back without any part of your body coming off of the wall. Do this 10-15 times and think about what you feel on your body. Some of the pain points may be weak points to address to improve your posture and mobility.

How do we fix posture?

Posture isn't something we “fix” per say, but rather something we are always trying to improve on or maintain. For example, the way we sit at our computer desks, sitting in our car, or while we watch TV. Being conscious of how we sit is important in the battle for proper posture. To help with improving and maintaining your posture, I have developed a program of eight exercises to do 2-3 times a week to help improve posture.

The Program

This program gives you two different workouts. Cycle through these at least 2-3 days a week to start seeing results!

Workout One:

Wall raises x15

Floor T’s x15

Floor Y’s x15

Floor W’s x15

Plank with Shoulder Tap x15 Each side

Workout Two:

Floor W’s x15

Bird Dogs x15

Side Plank x15

Floor Back Extension x15

Cat Cows x15

Posture is important when it comes to fitness, health, and everyday life. Be aware of your posture at all times, and always try to re-correct the way you sit or stand.
